Frequently Asked Questions

Why do you ask for my location?
Google considers nearby network names the same as asking for your location as the names of networks near you can be used to determine your location (if you have access to a large enough database of them - we definitely don't). We only check the name of the network you're actively using to determine if you're connected to your Switch. Network names never leave your device and are not used for any other purpose.
Why do you ask for access to my files?
File access is not strictly necessary, but in some cases (such as if you uninstall and reinstall the app), previous screenshots and videos may not be shown. We ask for file access just to be safe, but you can deny it if you'd prefer.
Why won't my device scan the QR code?
This is usually due to a bug in either your device or Google's QR code detection library. Unfortunately, there's not much we can suggest in either case beyond updating the app and your device. In the meantime, you can use manual connection mode.
Why won't my device connect to the Switch's WiFi?
There are two reasons we've seen for this - one is a bug that seems to pop up mostly in Samsung phones that prevents any app from connecting to networks.

The other issue is primarily in Android 10 and, put simply, prevents you from connecting using the same network name and a different password without rebooting.

The technical reason for this is that the device caches the password and, rather than use the new password you supply with the QR code, it reuses the old password. Unfortunately, there's no known way to work around this bug, and Google has stated that they do not intend to fix it. You can use manual mode instead.
Why is manual mode so complicated? Can't you do more of it for me?
Due to the reasons stated in the previous two questions, it's unfortunately not possible for manual mode to be simplified any further. We tried multiple options, including entering SSID and Password in the app and using Android's WiFi panel instead of the full settings page, but none of them allowed you to connect properly.
